Cochise splits home doubleheader with Yavapai

DOUGLAS, Ariz. --- The Cochise Baseball team was back at Bo Hall Field on Tuesday, coming off of a road trip that included two losses to Central Arizona 5-1 and 6-0. The Apaches were looking to bounce back against ACCAC D1 opponent Yavapai College, who also suffered two road losses at Pima College the previous weekend.

Game 1: Cochise 2, Yavapai 3

Both teams put strong starting pitching on the mound for Game 1 of the doubleheader on Tuesday. Freshmen Ramses Guerra earned the start for Cochise and recorded all 21 outs for the Apaches. Yavapai opened the scoring in the top of the second with two singles giving the Roughriders an early 2-0 lead. Another Yavapai run was scored in the fourth, but Cochise responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the frame. The Apaches were unable to overtake Yavapai and fell short 2-3. Guerra surrendered 10 hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out two and walking one. Freshman Hadley Smith led Cochise with two hits in three at-bats. Kenneth Rhein, Ruben Villaescusa, Mathis Meurant, and Francisco Laya each had one hit.

Game 2: Cochise 8, Yavapai 5

After suffering their third-straight loss, Cochise was determined and came out strong in Game 2 at Bo Hall Field taking a 2-1 lead over YCC in the first off of a Mathis Meurant triple and a Richard Gutierrez fielder's choice. Cochise took a 5-3 lead into the sixth inning but surrendered a solo home run, allowing the Roughriders to creep back into the game. Heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Cochise scored three runs to take an 8-5 lead and eventual win over YCC. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Tyson Noel started on the mound for Cochise, giving up five hits and three runs over four and one-third innings, striking out one and walking three. Freshman Olmedo Quezada pitched two and two third innings in relief, followed by Alejandro Vanegas, who threw two innings striking out three. Meurant led Cochise with three hits in five at-bats, followed by Gutierrez with two hits.
