Match with DII No. 1 ranked team Phoenix College ends in draw

DOUGLAS, Ariz. -- The Cochise College Women's Soccer team was back at home on Tuesday hosting Phoenix College who came into the match as the number one ranked team in NJCAA Division II. The Lady Bears came into the match with a 7-0 record previously defeating Chandler-Gilbert and Mesa Community College outscoring those opponents 15-0. The Apaches came off of a lopsided 8-0 win over South Mountain Saturday in hopes of keeping the momentum going at home.

Cochise struck first during the 15th minute of play when Freshman Sabrina Amezcua scored her nationally-leading 13th goal of the season off of an assist from Sophomore Paula Gonzalez. This was the first goal that Phoenix College had surrendered since August 18th. The Apaches took a narrow 1-0 lead going into halftime where they outshot PCC 3-2. The second half belonged to the Lady Bears as a goal was scored in the 25th minute to even the score 1-1. The match was fast-paced and physical as there was a total of 19 fouls called amongst the two teams, with one yellow card issued to Cochise Sophomore Valentina Velasquez in the second half. 

The match ended in a 1-1 draw giving both teams their first tie of the season.

Cochise Women's Soccer (5-2-1, 3-1-1) will host Eastern Arizona College (6-2-2, 4-1) on Tuesday, September 26th at 3:00 PM in Douglas as a rescheduled match from September 12th that was called due to inclement weather.
