Cochise defeats Mesa

Amezcua's hat trick pushes Cochise past Mesa in conference opener

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- The Cochise College Women's Soccer team opened conference play on Saturday, September 2nd on familiar grounds hosting Mesa Community College at Cyr Park in Sierra Vista. The visiting Thunderbirds came into Saturday having won only one match defeating Paradise Valley earlier in the week. The Apaches were coming off of a road split taking one of two at the Roughrider Showcase in Prescott, AZ.

It didn't take long for the Apaches to take the lead as Freshman standout Sabrina Amezcua scored in the 15th minute of the first half followed by a second goal only four minutes later off an assist from Sophomore Paula Gonzalez. Cochise managed to keep Mesa without a shot on goal during the first half outshooting the Thunderbirds 10-0 and maintaining a comfortable 5-0 lead at halftime.

Amezcua secured the first hat trick of the season scoring a third goal in the 32nd minute of the first half, along with goals from Freshman Mikaela Winter and Sophomore Valentina Velasquez

Mesa responded in the second half scoring a goal in the 29th minute, however, the Apaches answered quickly when Velasquez scored her second goal of the match cementing a conference-opening 6-1 win as the clock expired.
