Apaches split on the road in Roughrider Showcase

PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- The Cochise Women's Soccer team hit the road for the first time during the 2023 regular season this weekend participating in the annual "Roughrider Showcase" hosted by Yavapai College in Prescott, AZ. The entirety of the showcase was played on YCC's Ken Lindley Field, and included visiting schools such as Cochise, Arizona Western, and Western Wyoming College. 

On Friday, August 25th, the Apaches took the field against the Roughriders in an evening showdown. Cochise carried the momentum from their season-opening win scoring five goals in a 5-2 route of Yavapai. Freshman Sabrina Amezcua was the leading scorer for Cochise scoring two goals including a penalty kick during the final minutes of the match. Other scorers included Sophomores Dayana Gonzalez, Julia Giuriatti, and Valentina Velasquez. Freshmen Goalkeepers Alicia Garwood and Faye Jones both split time in the box for the Apaches with Garwood saving two Yavapai shots on goal. 

On Saturday, August 26th, Cochise faced off with Western Wyoming College (Rock Springs, WY) in an afternoon match that resulted in the Apache's first loss of the early regular season. Sophomore Paula Gonzalez was the lone scorer for Cochise in the close 1-2 loss to the Mustangs. Western Wyoming outshot Cochise 9-5 in the match, with the two goals coming from Quincy Chipman and McCall Hogge.

The Apaches (2-1) will host Mesa Community College (0-2) on Saturday, September 2nd at Cyr Park in Sierra Vista, AZ at 6:00 pm. No admission fee and Cochise College Soccer merchandise will be available for sale during the match.
