Cochise Women's Basketball clinches homecourt advantage for semifinals with win over Mesa

DOUGLAS, Ariz. --- It was a tale of two halves Monday evening, as the Cochise Women's Basketball team edged out visiting Mesa Community College to clinch the #2 seed in the upcoming Region Tournament. Mesa came out swinging early in the first half leading by as much as 7 over Cochise in the second quarter. A buzzer-beating 3-point shot from sophomore Fortuna Ngnawo allowed the Apaches to head into the locker room with a 1-point lead at halftime. The second half was all Cochise, as they stormed out to a 23-9 run in the third quarter and eventually pulled away with the 78-55 win. 

Ngnawo led all scorers collecting a double-double scoring 27 points with 17 rebounds. Freshman Micayla Silas came off of the bench scoring 16 points with 3 assists, Ali Hardwell was 4 for 8 from the field scoring 9 points with 3 assists.

The win over Mesa Community College ensured a home-court advantage for the 2024 NJCAA Region 1 Semifinals taking place on Saturday, March 9th.

Cochise Women's Basketball (23-7,18-5) will host Arizona Western College (21-9,17-6) for the Region 1 Semifinal game at Stronghold Gymnasium in Douglas, AZ at 5:00 pm. Due to the game being a region-sponsored postseason event, an entrance fee will be charged: $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children, all Cochise College students will be allowed free entry with student I.D (courtesy of Cochise College Student Services).
