Cochise bounces back from loss, sweeps through Central Arizona

COOLIDGE, Ariz. --- The Cochise Women's Basketball team bounced back from their loss to Arizona Western last week, after traveling to Coolidge, AZ to take on the Vaqueras of Central Arizona College. 

 

Friday, February 16th: Cochise 73, Central AZ 64

Game 1 on Friday evening was led by sophomore Fortuna Ngnawo who was coming off of another ACCAC Conference Player-of-the-Week honor including a 10-game double-double streak. The Apaches came out the gate hot in the first quarter leading the Vaqueras 17-13. Central AZ fought back in the second quarter outscoring Cochise 18-16. In the second half, it was all Cochise as they outscored CAC 40-33 to pull away with the 73-63 win. Ngnawo was 9 for 22 from the field including 7 for 9 from the charity stripe, scoring 25 points with 18 rebounds for another double-double. Freshman standout Michelle Nkolo was 6 for 7 from the field scoring 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.

 

Saturday, February 17th: Cochise 70, Central AZ 59

The Apaches and Vaqueras met again on Saturday afternoon for the final time this regular season. Cochise jumped out to an early 19-9 lead after the first quarter and did not look back from there, as they pulled away with a 70-59 win over CAC to sweep the Vaqueras on their home court. Freshman Micayla Silas led all Apache scorers coming off of the bench with 15 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 steals. Ali Hardwell followed with 14 points, including making all four free throws she attempted. Sophomore Clara Gonzalez was 4 for 9 from the field scoring 12 points with 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Ngnawo collected another double-double scoring 11 points with 21 rebounds and 4 steals.
