Cochise defeats South Mountain

Cochise Women's Basketball wins fifth straight taking two at home

DOUGLAS, Ariz. -- The Apaches honored their sophomores this week with more than just fancy posters and gifts; they topped all of that off with two solid wins. The first win came at the despair of Mesa who beat the Apaches by 3-points earlier in the season. With revenge on their mind, the Apaches secured the 11-point win. Their dominant defense forced the Thunderbirds into 22 turnovers. Throughout the game it often looked like the Apaches would pull off a blowout type of win but the Thunderbirds displayed true bouts of the fight and never let the game get too out of reach. Three Apaches scored in double figures in the match. Freshman Maeva de la Fortuna Ngnawo led the Apaches with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Deja Jones chipped in 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 4-steals; freshman Alayna Contreras added 10 points off the bench.

Saturday the sophomores were officially celebrated in the last home conference game against South Mountain. From the top, the Apaches dominated the match and poured in a season-high 101 points. The fourth quarter was truly a sight to see as the Apaches showcased their smothering defense once again, holding the Cougars to 7 points. The offensive ability of the Apaches was also on full display in the fourth quarter as the Apaches poured in a season-high 34 points. Four Apaches scored in double figures but the Apaches were led by sophomores Jess Lawson and Tatjana Tatar who both scored 16 points; which tied a season-high for Lawson and secured a season-high for Tatar.

Tuesday, February 28th the Apaches travel to Scottsdale for their last conference game before heading into post-season play. The Apaches will return home on March 7th to host Arizona Western in the first round of regionals. The game will begin at 6:00 pm.
