Cochise Women's Basketball splits road trip, defeats Phoenix 71-35

PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Cochise traveled to the mountains of Yavapai College and dropped a close one; splitting the two-game conference series with the Roughriders. The Apaches were only able to outscore the Roughriders in three out of the four quarters. The Roughriders shot the ball well and seemed comfortable in their home gym. They made 50.9% of their shots; where nearly half of their shot attempts were threes. The Apaches shot the ball terribly, going 29.3% from the field and 19.3% from the three-point line. Three Apaches finished the game with double-digit scoring. Freshman Chana Paxixe finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman Maeva de la Fortuna Ngnawo finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Deja Jones came off the bench ready to contribute and led the Apaches with 15 points. The Roughriders defeated the Apaches 73-66.

 

Saturday, February 11th, the Apaches traveled to Phoenix College to take on the Bears. The Apaches dominated the game, holding the Bears to under ten points in two out of the four quarters. Overall the Apaches had a balanced scoring night where 12 out of the 13 active players scored a basket for the Apaches. Two Apaches finished with double-digit scoring. Freshman Maeva de la Fortuna Ngnawo loaded the stat sheet with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 steals. Freshman Clara Gonzalez put on an offensive clinic shooting 75% from the three-point line and finishing with 13 points to lead all scorers. The Apaches finished the game in dominant fashion with a 71-35 win over the Bears.

 

This week the Apaches will continue their road stint and travel to Coolidge, Arizona to take on Central Arizona College and Chandler, Arizona to take on Chandler-Gilbert Community College. They will play in Coolidge Wednesday, February 15th at 7:30 pm and in Chandler Saturday, February 18th at 4:00 pm. The Apaches have a total of 5 conference games left and are looking to finish strong.
