Cochise Women's basketball defeats Glendale

Cochise Women's Basketball wins two on the road this week

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Wednesday, January 25th, the Apaches took on Arizona Western. The game was played live on ESPN+ for the world to see. Although the Apaches completely dominated the first time these two teams met, they knew the Matadors would come to play hard and seek revenge. The game resulted in a 29-point win, where the Apaches were ahead by 38 points at the half. This second meeting was not as easy for the Apaches. It seemed as if every time the Apaches tried to pull away, the Matadors would continue to fight and not allow for a huge disparity in points. Wednesday's game was not a great performance for the Apaches as they only had two players scoring in double figures and accumulated 21 turnovers. Overall the game was a very sloppy game but the Apaches pulled away with a 52-40 win. This was not Cochise's best outing but championship-caliber teams find a way to pull wins out of tough situations and circumstances; and versus Arizona Western, the Apaches did just that.

Freshman Maeva de la Fortuna Ngnawo showed up big in the contest and had a dominating 22 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Alayna Contres went 3-3 from the three-point line and ended the game with 11 points.

Saturday, January 28th the Apaches faced the Gauchos of Glendale Community College. The Apaches dominated the contest from the start and finished with a 76-45 win over the Gauchos. Three Apaches ended the game scoring in double figures. Freshman Chana Paxixe had a solid game, ending with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Deja Jones came off the bench and ended with 10 points and 5 assists; really showing her playmaking abilities. Freshman Maeva de la Fortuna Ngnawo ended the week with domination scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ngnawo has continued to display amazing strength and skill in the post. She has begun to be double and even triple-teamed at times, but continues to produce dominant numbers.

Wednesday, February 1st the Apaches look for some revenge of their own, as they take on the Gila Monsters of Eastern Arizona College at 7:30 pm. The Apaches fell to the Gila Monsters in a close battle where they lost by 8 points and missed 16 free throws. Saturday, February 4th the Apaches will face Pima Community College and look to get their third conference sweep of the season.
