Cochise Women's Basketball wins two, continues winning streak

DOUGLAS, Ariz. -- The Cochise College Apaches end the week 2-0 and 15-2 overall. Their first win of the week came in a tight battle against the Roughriders of Central Arizona. Central Arizona fought to the very end but fell to the Apaches 62-67. The Apaches were led by Freshman Maeva de la Fortuna Ngnawo. She dominated the game from the start and ended with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Sophomore Deja Jones came off the bench and finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Jones started the season in the starting lineup but has appeared to have embraced being the sixth man and has provided an increase in production. Since the December break, she has averaged an impressive 15.8 points per game; in the 5 games she's participated in. This is a huge increase from her almost 8 points per game before the break. Her shooting percentages have also increased, shooting a staggering 57.1% from the three this month and 48.1% from the field this month.

 

The second game of the week was against the Coyotes of Chandler-Gibert Community College. The Apaches finished the game in dominant fashion, beating the Coyotes by 40 points. Cochise finished with five Apache in double figures, Deyana Bogan with 10, Maeva de la Fortuna Ngnawo with 12, Alayna Contreras with 12, Jess Lawson with 14, and Deja Jones leading the way with 17.

 

This week the Apaches are gearing up for a battle against Mesa Community College on Wednesday, January 18th. The Apaches will travel to Mesa, Arizona. The game begins at 7:30 pm. Mesa is currently sitting behind Cochise in the ACCAC rankings and is ranked #6 in the NJCAA DII rankings. Saturday, January 21st the Apaches will match up against South Mountain Community College; at South Mountain at 4:00 pm.
