Cochise Women's hoops continues winning streak with large wins over Arizona Western and Glendale

DOUGLAS, Ariz.-- Cochise began the week with a huge game as they faced Arizona Western, the #13 team in the NJCAA. The Apaches seemed excited and ready for the challenge as they outscored Western by 23-9 in the first quarter. The domination continued in the second quarter and the Apaches defeated the Matadors 32-8 in that quarter. This gave the Apaches a 55-17 lead entering half time. Cochise seemed to cool down in the second half, only scoring 28 points the entire half.

The team was led by freshman Alayna Contreras who poured in 13 points; going 3-3 from the 3 point line and added 8 assists. Sophomore Deyana Bogan got the team started with many early buckets, and finished with 12. Freshman Clara Gonzalez finished the game with a career high 10 points and 5 steals.

Wednesday's game against Arizona Western served as a great start to the week of games as the Apaches went on to compete against Glendale Community College. The Gauchos are a tough team that plays hard to the very end and they love to score quick in transition. These were things the Apaches had to keep in mind. The Apaches fought to the end and finished the game in dominant fashion, winning 44-79. Cochise was led by their post who displayed their authority over the paint all night. Freshmen forwards Fortuna Ngnawo and Andjela Bigovic led the charge with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and 10 points and 7 rebounds, respectively. Freshman Guard Chana Paxixe also scored in double figures with 13 points.

The Apaches face a huge challenge this week starting with a very good Eastern Arizona College team who is #1 in the ACCAC and a Pima team who is historically well coached with great shooters. The Apaches head to Thatcher, Arizona Wednesday December 7th and play at EAC at 8:00pm and Tucson, Arizona Saturday December 10th and play at 4:00pm at PCC.
