Cochise College Rodeo team hosts first event of the Fall season at Cochise County Fair

DOUGLAS, Ariz. -- The 2023-2024 Fall Rodeo season was underway this weekend at the Cochise County Fairgrounds, as the Cochise Rodeo team hosted visiting schools such as Central Arizona College, New Mexico State University, University of Arizona, Mesalands Community College, Dine College and more. The opening Rodeo drew thousands of spectators throughout the weekend, as the event coincided with the 99th Annual Cochise County Fair. According to head coach Lynn Smith, this event is guaranteed to draw the biggest crowd that her team would perform in front of, next to the National Finals in Wyoming. 

Unofficial results were posted by the Cochise College Rodeo team on Sunday noting that the Cochise College Women's program finished 2nd overall, while the Men's team finished 4th overall. 

Leading the Women's team was Freshman Sealey Bottom of Cheyenne, OK. Bottom won the long round of the goat-tying event with a 9.0s run, with a 9.6 during the short round the following day. Sophomore Macie Fowlie of Phoenix, AZ placed 3rd in the long round of the goat-tying event with a time of 10.0s and 9.6s in the short round. Sophomore Acelyn Brink of Buffalo, SD placed 3rd in the goat-tying long round with 9.9s and 7th overall with an 11.0s short round. Sophomore Taylar Smith of Montpelier, ID scored a 10.5s in the long round of the goat-tying event and 10.7s in the short round. Freshman Naomi Yager of Moses Lake, WA finished the long round of the goat-tying event with a run of 10.5s and an 11.0s in the short round.

For the Women's breakaway roping competition, Freshman Quincy Downey took 1st place in the long round with a score of 2.9s and 4.5s in the short round finishing 3rd overall. Taylar Smith scored a 3.8s run on the first day, but due to a "barrier" penalty finished 6th overall in the event. Downey and Bottom both finished in the Top-10 for the barrel-racing event with scores of 17.65s and 17.55s respectively.

For the Cochise Men's Rodeo team, Freshman Taten Erickson of Hobson, MT placed 2nd in the long round of the steer-wrestling with a 5.1s run. Erickson finished 3rd overall in the steer-wrestling competition without having posted a short round score. Freshman Beau Eager of Eager, AZ placed 4th in the long round of the steer-wrestling event with a 6.3s run, enough for an overall 5th place in the event. For the tie-down roping event Erickson placed 3rd overall with a score of 10.4s and 11.5s in the short round enough to finish 3rd overall. Erickson also finished 3rd overall in the "All-Around Cowboy" standings.
