Cochise Women's Rodeo Team wins Fort Huachuca event

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Cochise College hosted its spring rodeo event this past weekend partnering with U.S. Army MWR of Ft. Huachuca. The rodeo included teams from the NIRA Grand Canyon Region such as Central Arizona College, New Mexico State University, Mesalands Community College, Fort Lewis College, and Navajo Technical College. Hundreds of spectators packed Wren Arena for the annual event, which according to rodeo officials, was sold out for both days. 

The Cochise College Women's Rodeo team finished first place overall with Taylar Smith placing 2nd in the goat-tying event, and Laynee Gregerson placing 3rd overall in the average on two-head competition. Molly Rotenberger placed 3rd in the goat-tying event on the first day, however, her goat didn't stay tied on the second day which didn't qualify for an official score. 

Macie Fowlie also earned a qualifying score in the goat-tying competition on Saturday but did not finish with a qualifying score during the short round on Sunday. In the breakaway event, Rotenberger placed 3rd-5th in the long round on Saturday but earned most of her final points total during the short round on Sunday during the barrel racing competition. 

In the men's events, Cochise Sophomore Gavin Hershberger finished 1st overall in the short round of the team roping competition.

The Cochise College Rodeo team will continue their Spring schedule on April 1st, as they head to the regional competition in Payson, Arizona.
