Bio

Jerry Carrillo begins his 27th season as the head coach of the Cochise Apaches. Over the past 26 years, Cochise has amassed 581 wins, which breaks the record for most wins under one head coach at Cochise College. He’s led the Apaches to 25 consecutive Region playoff appearances, including the Region I Championship in 2000, 2001, 2011, 2015, and 2016. His 1999-00, 2009-10, and 2011-12 squads won the ACCAC Conference titles outright. His 2000-01 and 2015-16 squads were co-champions of the ACCAC.

While at Cochise, Carrillo has established an up-tempo style of play. Eleven of his teams have earned the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Award, and 80 of his players have gone on to sign with four-year universities. Carrillo was named the ACCAC/Region I Coach of the Year in 2005-06. He was chosen by the NJCAA Coaches Association to coach the National JUCO team in 2004. He was selected as the floor coach by USA basketball for the 2011 USA Men’s U19 team. Prior to Cochise, Carrillo was the head boys’ basketball coach at Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona, from 1992 through 1995. He worked as a Division I assistant coach at Cal State-Northridge from 1990 through 1992 and was an assistant at Jamestown Community College in New York a season prior.

Carrillo played high school basketball at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona, where he was named an all-metro selection his senior year in 1982. He also has been inducted into the Salpointe Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Carrillo graduated from the University of Arizona in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He has a master’s degree in kinesiology from California State University-Northridge.

Carrillo is an academic adviser who teaches full-time in the health and physical education department. He and his wife, Kathy, have two children, Casey Ann, 24, and Carly Elizabeth, 20, who live in Tucson, Arizona.
