Cochise sweeps Yavapai on the road

Cochise sweeps Yavapai College on the road 73-69 and 81-68

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — The Cochise College Apaches Men's Basketball team took to the road this past weekend and were able to sweep the home-standing Yavapai Roughriders in back-to-back ACCAC battles this past Friday and Saturday in Prescott, Arizona.

Friday, January 26th: Cochise 73, Yavapai 69

In game one Cochise used a very strong defensive effort to come back from a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat Yavapai 73-69. The Apaches were outplayed in the first half and trailed 43-31 at the break. Cochise was led by sophomores Tracy Godfrey and Jordan Hernandez who each tallied 14 points in the win. Sophomore Jalen Barbee chipped in 12 points and 7 rebounds for the Apaches. Cochise outscored Yavapai 42-26 in the second half.

Saturday, January 27th: Cochise 81, Yavapai 68

In game two Cochise jumped on Yavapai early and took a 43-29 lead going into intermission. Cochise held off several Roughrider efforts to climb back into the game and prevailed with an 81-68 win on the road. Cochise was led by Hernandez who tallied his first college triple-double with 10 points, 10 assists, and 11 rebounds in the win.  Sophomore Diego Sharp led the Apaches in scoring with 18 points, while Godfrey chipped in 14 points.

Cochise moves to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in ACCAC play.

After the weekend sweep, Cochise Men's Basketball head coach stated, "As we all get used to our new unbalanced ACCAC schedule, our guys continue to fight and band together as a unit. We did not come out with great offensive sharpness or very good defensive energy in game one, thus falling behind by double digits in the first half. To our guy's credit, they defended very hard in the second half and held them to just 26 points to get the win. In game 2 we defended well from the start and shared the ball very well. Diego Sharp attacked on offense and shot the ball well. Jordan Hernandez continues to show great on-floor toughness and leadership as he plays so many minutes night in and night out, and gets a triple-double from the Point Guard position, which is very impressive. Lastly, our Assistant Coach Derek Lane prepared us for Yavapai's offensive action as we had them down to the tee!"
