Cochise defeats Paradise Valley

Cochise Baseball extends winning streak to eight games with sweep of Paradise Valley

DOUGLAS, Ariz. --- It was a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Bo Hall Field in Douglas, but the weather was not a factor for the red-hot Cochise Baseball team who were welcoming Paradise Valley Community College riding a six-game winning streak. The Apaches were 11-8 in March coming into the doubleheader, while PVCC was heading in a different direction having only won four games in the last month.

Game 1: Cochise 4, Paradise Valley 3

In Game 1 on Saturday afternoon, Cochise scored early on and was enough to secure a 4-3 win over the Pumas. A sacrifice fly from sophomore Kieran Gaffney scored a run for Cochise in the first and was added with two more runs in the second from Kenneth Rhein and Pablo Garcia. Cochise added another run in the third, allowing starting pitcher Sam Pitts to settle in and give way to relief pitcher Alex Figueroa to shut the door on PVCC. Pitts surrendered five hits and three runs over five innings, striking out three and walking two. Figueroa threw two innings of shutout baseball for Cochise, surrendering one hit and striking out two. Garcia, Gaffney, and Rhein each drove in one run for the Apaches. Sophomore Mathis Meurant went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Cochise in hits.

Game 2: Cochise 2, Paradise Valley 1

It was a pitcher's duel in Game 2, but Cochise ultimately came out on top defeating PVCC 2-1 in nine innings. Sophomore Eduardo Torres started the game on the mound for Cochise and recorded 16 outs. The Apaches took the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Pablo Garcia singled scoring one run. The Pumas responded in the sixth tying the game at one off of relief pitcher Alejandro Vanegas. Gaffney capped off his big day with a single in the bottom of the eighth scoring the go-ahead run. Torres gave up five hits and one run over five and one-third innings, striking out two and walking three. Figueroa, Vanegas, Olmedo Quezada, and Tyson Noel each threw in relief for Cochise. The Apaches collected seven hits in Game 2, led by Garcia who went 2-for-4. Francisco Laya, Mason Wray, Ruben Villaescusa, and Kieran Gaffney each had one hit.
