Cochise splits home doubleheader with Eastern Arizona

DOUGLAS, Ariz. -- The Cochise College Baseball team host Eastern Arizona College on Saturday, April 8th for a doubleheader at Bo Hall Field. The Apaches were coming off two wins against Mesa College on Tuesday and were looking for a momentum boost heading into the regular season's final weeks. The Gila Monsters of EAC were coming off of splits with Paradise Valley and Phoenix College leading up to Saturday.

Game 1: Cochise 1, Eastern Arizona 3

Cochise and Eastern Arizona both had strong efforts on the mound for Game 1, however, the Gila Monsters came away with the win led by Sophomore Isaac Silva who completed the game allowing only one run off of three hits. Mathias LaCombe was the starting pitcher for the Apaches who surrendered three runs on five hits over four innings, striking out five. Marco Ozuna made an appearance in relief throwing three innings. Cochise struck first in Game 1 scoring a run off of a single by Mathis Meurant, but EAC managed to answer back in the top half of the second and added two more runs in the third. A pitcher's duel continued as both pitchers failed to surrender a run for the remainder of the game. Pablo Garcia, Ruben Villaeascusa, and Meurant each collected a hit in the game.

 

Game 2: Cochise 4, Eastern Arizona 3

The Apaches were able to answer back taking the second game and the final matchup of the season with EAC. The Gila Monsters took a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning when Pablo Garcia drew a walk off of the EAC starting pitcher scoring one run. The Apaches pulled away for good with two more runs in the fifth inning when Eduarny Martinez singled followed by a double from Meurant. Fernando Barreda was the starting pitcher for Cochise giving up three runs on seven hits over seven and two-thirds innings, striking out seven and walking one. Evan Shaw came in relief for Barreda striking out four, and allowing only one hit in one and a third inning of work. Martinez led the Apaches in Game 2 offensively, going 2 for 3.

Cochise Baseball (29-15;13-13) will travel to Coolidge, Arizona to take on Central Arizona College (39-5;26-2) on Tuesday, April 11th, and then to Prescott, AZ to face Yavapai College (24-13;17-9) on Saturday, April 15th.
