Cochise wins both games against Mesa

Cochise uses a combined 31 hits in two games to sweep Mesa

DOUGLAS, Ariz. -- The near 30mph wind gusts in Douglas were no issue for the Cochise Baseball team, who totaled for 19 runs and over 30 hits in two games to sweep the visiting Mesa Community College Thunderbirds Tuesday afternoon. The Apaches were coming off of a doubleheader split on Saturday, April 1st with Paradise Valley and were looking to make a statement back at home on Bo Hall Field. As the conference schedule begins its second round of matchups, Cochise finds itself in the middle of the race aiming for a spot in the region tournament at the end of the month.

Game 1: Cochise 13, Mesa 0

Game 1 was both an offensive explosion and a solid effort on the mound, as the Apaches collected 16 hits at the plate while starting pitcher Marco Ozuna contributed by throwing a complete game shutout striking out five, and not allowing a single walk. The Apaches got off to a quick start by scoring in the bottom half of the first inning, but the lopsided victory began in the third when Cochise scored eight runs led by Mathis Muerant, Makai DeSoto, and Eduarny Martinez, who all drove in runs. Martinez took the Mesa starting pitcher deep in the third inning blasting his fifth home run of the season. In total, Cochise had 16 hits with Gerardo Hernandez, Pablo Garcia, Meurant, Martinez, and Christian Olea all putting up multiple hits. The game was called due to the 10-run rule in the fifth as Cochise won the first game 13-0.

Game 2: Cochise 6, Mesa 0

The second game of the afternoon was the same story as Cochise Baseball collected 15 more hits to secure another win over MCC. On the mound starting pitcher Evan Shaw threw another gem throwing all nine innings for the Apaches striking out 15 Thunderbirds and only allowing one walk and one hit. Cochise began things in the first scoring three runs and giving Shaw a lead to work with. Martinez hit his sixth home run of the season in the seventh inning. The Apaches totaled 15 hits led by Joel Lindahl, Olea, Meurant, and Martinez who all had multiple hits. Lindahl led all Apache hitters with three. Cochise came away with a 6-0 win giving them momentum heading into Saturday's home doubleheader.
