Cochise defeats Scottsdale in 14-inning game to win 5th straight road contest

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Cochise Baseball traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona Saturday for an afternoon conference doubleheader with the SCC Fighting Artichokes. It took extra innings for the Apaches to come out on top in Game 2 which lasted nearly four hours in a pitcher's duel 14-inning affair. 

 

Game 2: Cochise 6, Scottsdale 4

The game was tied at 4 heading into the top half of the 14th inning when Cochise infielder Joel Lindahl singled on the first pitch of the at-bat scoring the go-ahead run. Earlier in the contest, the Apaches jumped out on top early in the first off of another RBI single by Lindahl. Cochise held a healthy 3-0 lead over SCC until starting pitcher Fernando Barreda surrendered a 3-run home run which tied the game in the 3rd. Cochise responded with another run in the fifth off of a sacrifice from Mathis Meurant scoring Gerardo Hernandez. The Artichokes answered back in the home half of the 7th when relief pitcher Alex Figueroa gave up a single scoring a run and knotting the game up at four.

Ultimately Cochise Baseball came away with their 5th straight road win, defeating SCC 6-4. Barreda lasted six innings allowing three runs with eight strikeouts. Alex Figueroa, Angel Ortiz, Marco Ozuna, Samir Rojas, and Zak Elvy all contributed in relief on the mound, combining for six innings, four strikeouts, and two walks. The Apaches combined for 12 hits offensively, with Lindahl, Hernandez, and Eduarny Martinez each collecting multiple hits. Martinez belted his 4th home run of the season in the third inning.

 

Game 1: Cochise 3, Scottsdale 1

In the first game of the doubleheader, SCC opened up with the lead in the first inning which was answered in the third by Cochise when a Martinez single scored one run, followed by another RBI single from Makai DeSoto. The Apaches pulled away with a 3-1 win over SCC. Mathias LaCombe got the start for Cochise surrendering only one run on four hits over seven innings, striking out 12. Gerardo Hernandez went 2 for 3 which led all Apache hitters.
