Cochise Baseball sweeps doubleheader on the road at Eastern AZ

THATCHER, Ariz. -- Cochise College Baseball took two wins on the road in a critical matchup with conference foe Eastern Arizona this weekend. The Apaches were coming off of a Spring Break homestand which consisted of a win over Fraser Valley (Canada), two losses to Pima College, and a sweep of Ottawa University JV.

On Saturday, March 18th, the first game was all Cochise as they defeated the Gila Monsters 7-3. The Apaches pulled away for good in the first game when Mathis Meurant singled scoring one run as well as a single from Makai DeSoto and a sacrifice fly from Kieran Gaffney scoring two more runs in the third inning. The Apaches put up three more runs in the seventh inning off of a big inning offensively from DeSoto, Joel Lindahl, and Gaffney who each had an RBI. Fernando Barreda was the starting pitcher for Cochise who lasted six innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, while striking out seven and walking one. Offensively, the Apaches collected eight hits in game 1 with Meurant and DeSoto each collecting multiple hits.

In game 2, starting pitcher Mathias LaCombe pitched a complete game shutout against EAC leading the Apaches to a close 2-0 victory. Lacombe's gem included 11 strikeouts and only one walk. The Cochise bats were able to provide support early as they put up two runs in the first off of a single by Lindahl and an error on EAC scoring DeSoto. Two runs were all that was needed with the strong effort on the mound from Lacombe.

Cochise Baseball (20-12) winners of four straight, host Chandler-Gilbert (16-13) on Tuesday, March 21st, and heads to Scottsdale (12-10) on Saturday, March 25th.
