Cochise Baseball drops 2 to South Mountain in first road trip of the regular season

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Cochise College Baseball team hit the road for the first time in the early 2023 season, as they headed to South Mountain Community College on Saturday, March 4th for an afternoon doubleheader. The Apaches were coming off a four-game win streak with wins over Arizona Christian and Scottsdale Post Grad. In game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader, the Apaches fell to the Cougars 9-1. Fernando Barreda was the starting pitcher for Cochise, going three and a third innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out six. Alex Figueroa and Samir Rojas each made an appearance in relief. Eduarny Martinez, Mason Wray, Dylan Bradford, and Gerardo Hernandez each collected a hit for Cochise.

In game 2, a 3-run Cochise first inning, lead by an Eduarny Martinez homerun, was quickly answered by a 5-run bottom half from South Mountain in what seemed to be a back-and-forth affair for nine innings. Cochise collected 12 hits in the high-scoring game which finished in a 10-7 SMCC victory. Angel Ortiz was the starting pitcher lasting only two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits and five runs while striking out one and walking one. Mathias LaCombe, Marco Ozuna, and Zak Elvy each contributed in relief for the Apaches. Wray, Ruben Villaescusa, Mathis Meurant, and Eduarny Martinez each had multiple hits for Cochise.

Cochise Baseball (13-8) will be back at home on Tuesday, March 7th hosting Glendale Community College (16-7) for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm.
