Cochise baseball sweeps Eastern Arizona College

The Cochise College baseball team swept Eastern Arizona College at home on Tuesday, March 15. The Apaches took game one with a victory of 9-0. Sophomore RHP Treyjen Meza earned the win for the Apaches. Meza allowed seven hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out three and walking one. Angel Ortiz and Mathias LaCombe entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. In the second inning, Cochise fired up the offense when Leo Melendez doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Cochise secured the victory thanks to five runs in the fifth inning. The offensive onslaught came from singles by Cameron Crotte and Aaron Marsh, who both had RBI's. Apaches totaled 11 hits in the game. Marsh, Crotte, and Connor Caskenette each managed multiple hits for Apaches. Marsh went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Apaches in hits. Cochise played clean defense and didn't commit a single error in the field, cruising to a 9-0 victory in game one.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the pitching was strong on both sides. The Cochise baseball pitchers struck out 12, while Eastern AZ pitchers sat down ten. Cochise turned the ball over to Freshman RHP Fernando Barreda to start. Barreda allowed nine hits and two runs over six innings, striking out eight and walking zero. Aaron Marsh went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Apaches in hits. Cochise remained clean defensively and didn't commit a single error in the field. The Apaches got things moving in the second inning when Brayden Gluth's wild pitch allowed one run to score for Apaches. After going down 2-1 and trailing from the third inning, Cochise knotted the game up at two in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cameron Crotte drove in one with an RBI single to right field. The Apaches won Tuesday's game in a dramatic fashion. The game was tied at two, with Cochise batting in the bottom of the ninth when Alan Ochoa was hit by a pitch, scoring a run for a walk-off win. Cochise will be back in action on Friday, March 18, at home against Frasier Valley. Then the team will travel to Tucson to play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19, against Bismarck State College.

ACCAC conference play will start back up next Tuesday, March 22, against Chandler Gilbert Community College.
