Cochise baseball stays hot at home with a sweep over Gateway CC

The Cochise College baseball team continued to play well at home with another sweep against Gateway CC on March 12. In the first game, Sophomore RHP Jose Velasquez was on the hill for Apaches. The righty went four and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out four. Sophomore RHP Angel Ortiz relieved Velazquez by going two and a third innings striking out four. The Apaches got on the board first after a double from Makai DeSoto scored Gerardo Hernandez.

Gateway answered back with two of their own at the top of the second. In the bottom of the third inning, the Apaches tied things up at two. Connor Caskenette drove in one with a single. Cochise took the lead for good with five runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth, Gerardo Hernandez singled on the first pitch of the at bat that got past the outfield scoring three runs. Eduarny Martinez singled on a 3-0 count, scoring one run. Damian Garcia drew a walk and scored one run. Cochise would lead the first game and cruise to a 7-3 victory. The Apaches tallied 11 hits on the day. Cameron Crotte, Gerardo Hernandez, Makai Desoto, and Caskenette had multiple hits for Apaches. Crotte went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Apaches in hits.

Both teams were strong on the mound on Saturday in game two of the doubleheader, but Apaches defeated Gateway 3-1. The Cochise pitchers allowed just four hits to Gateway. Freshman LHP Evan Shaw was on the hill for Apaches. The lefty went three innings, allowing one run on one hit, striking out six and walking one. Freshman RHP Martin Miranda relieved Shaw and threw a clean four innings striking out six and walking none. Sophomore RHP Marco Ozuna threw two innings and closed the game out for his third save of the year. Cochise's pitching was dominant and kept Gateway off the board after the first inning run they scored. After a run scored in the first inning, the Apaches evened things up at one in the bottom of the first inning when an error scored one run for Apaches. Cochise pulled away for good with two runs in the third inning. In the third, Eduarny Martinez homered on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs making it 3-1, the final for game two. Martinez went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Apaches in hits. Apaches didn't commit a single error in the field.
