Apaches and Matadors go down to wire in Top-20 match

DOUGLAS, Ariz. --- The #18 ranked Cochise Women's Soccer team hosted the undefeated #4 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Tuesday afternoon, in a match that took nearly 75 minutes to see its first goal. AWC came into Douglas with a 10-0 overall record, previously defeating Eastern Arizona in a close contest. The Apaches were coming off of a lopsided 13-0 win over Community Christian in Sierra Vista for Sophomore Night last Saturday.

The Apaches knew they needed to turn the page quickly as the Matadors came in with the ACCAC regular season title on their minds. Cochise and Arizona Western were neck-and-neck in the first half, keeping each other to limited shots on goal in a fast and aggressive pace heading into halftime tied 0-0.

It wasn't until the 75th minute of the match when AWC's Karla Moreno found the back of the net off of a rebound from Cochise Goalkeeper Alicia Garwood's swatting save. The Mats scored another five minutes later, adding insurance; however, a successful penalty shot by Cochise freshman Michelle Gomez allowed the Apaches to cut the deficit in half. With four minutes remaining in regulation, AWC added much-needed insurance, scoring another goal, running away with a 3-1 lead and eventual win.
