Amezcua picks up where she left off as Cochise Women's Soccer goes 2-1-1 in Wyoming

CASPER, Wy --- The Cochise Women's Soccer season is officially underway as the Apaches took the long road to the state of Wyoming over the weekend. Cochise played four matches in five days to kick off their season, coming back home with two wins. Santos Rangel made his debut as the new head coach of a program with 19 new players added to the roster. 

Friday, August 23rd: Cochise 2, North Idaho 0

The five-day road swing began Friday in Rock Springs, Wyoming where Cochise faced off against the North Idaho College Cardinals. The Apaches were on the board first when sophomore Sabrina Amezcua scored off of a header from a corner kick in the 6th-minute mark of the match. Cochise took a 1-0 lead into halftime behind three saves from sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Garwood. Newcomer Mya Bowler scored the 2nd goal for the Apaches in the second half at the top of the box off an assist from Celiane Periera. Cochise outshot North Idaho 13-5, keeping the Cardinals to only three shots on goal the entire match.

Saturday, August 24th: Cochise 3, Western Wyoming 0

Cochise continued their weekend in Rock Springs taking on Western Wyoming College Saturday afternoon, continuing their momentum from their season-opener. The Apaches were led by sophomores Sabrina Amezcua, Celiane Pereira, and freshman Darienne Thompson who each scored a goal en route to a 3-0 shutout over the Mustangs. Goalkeepers Alicia Garwood and Allyson Gonzalez contributed to the shutout combining for five saves on the day. Amezcua and Bowler each had one assist.

Monday, August 26th: Cochise 1, #16 Casper 1

The Apaches took on #16 Casper College on Monday morning at their home field in Casper, WY which ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. The Thunderbirds took an early 1-0 lead over the Apaches, however, Cochise continued to pressure Casper as they collected 14 total shots. Amezcua continued her hot start to the season with a goal in the final 30 seconds of the match off of an assist from Jocelyn Navarro and Celiane Pereira. Casper was left with only 27 seconds to try and score the winning goal, however, came up short as the Apaches managed to come away with the draw.

Tuesday, August 27th: Cochise 3, #14 Laramie County 5

The Wyoming road trip concluded in Cheyenne, as the Apaches visited #14 Laramie County College and came up short 3-5. Cochise jumped to an early 2-0 lead thanks to another two goals from sophomore Sabrina Amezcua, but the fast and aggressive front from LCCC answered back quickly scoring three goals taking a 3-2 lead at the half. Amezcua earned the hat trick scoring her third goal of the match in the second half, but Laramie County added some cushion to their lead eventually pulling away with the 5-3 win. The box was again covered by Garwood and Gonzalez who each had two saves. Diana Montoya and Michelle Gomez each had one assist.

Cochise Women's Soccer (2-1-1) will host Trinidad State College (0-1) on Saturday, August 31st at 3:00 pm on the Cochise College Douglas Campus. There is no admission fee and concessions will be available.
