Cochise defeats Chandler

Cochise Women's Soccer ends season with an exclamation mark on Chandler-Gilbert

CHANDLER, Ariz. --- The Cochise College Women's Soccer team wrapped up their 2023 season with a lopsided win over Chandler-Gilbert this Tuesday.  The Apaches visited the Coyotes with a bitter taste in their mouth, as they were forced to cancel their Sophomore Night game this weekend due to a lack of players from Paradise Valley Community College. Cochise wanted to finish their season on a positive note, and that they did, as they came away with a decisive 6-0 over CGCC lead by yet another multi-goal effort from Freshman star Sabrina Amezcua.

The match began with an Amezcua goal in the 6th minute of play off of an assist from Sophomore Dayana Gonzalez. Another Amezcua goal ten minutes later gave the Apaches a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Paula Gonzalez put one in the net, followed by a third goal from Amezcua to give her the hat trick. The Apaches led 4-0 going into halftime, but continued where they left off when Sophomore Sabrina Ramos-Camatta kicked in an unassisted goal in the 64th minute. Sabrina Amezcua scored her 4th and final goal of the season off of an assist from Ramos-Camatta in the final minute, all but cementing several conference post-season honors. The Apaches outshot the Coyotes 14-3, giving Freshman Goalkeeper Alicia Andrews a rather easy day in the box.

Cochise finishes their 2023 season with an overall record of 7-5-2 and a conference record of 5-4-2. Some tough losses and ties during the middle part of the season potentially kept the Apaches from reaching the post-season this year, along with some key injuries sprinkled in throughout the season.

Although the outcome of this season wasn't what they had hoped for, the Cochise College Women's Soccer season has plenty to look forward to during the Spring and following 2024 season.  "[The season] didn't end the way we wanted it to. But definitely learned some valuable lessons along the way" Head Coach Ricky Escalera stated. The Apaches will return 14 Freshmen to the 2024 roster which will include several new recruits to help fill in the gaps. Coach Escalera and Santos Rangel will be on the recruiting trail as quickly as they can be to prepare for a stronger 2024 season.
