Apaches keep it rolling past #12 Arizona Western for 10th straight win
DOUGLAS, Ariz. — The Cochise Women's Basketball team was preparing for a big late-season matchup at home against #12 Arizona Western. The Apaches were coming off a dominant performance on the road against Community Christian College, while Arizona Western was riding a strong win of their own vs Yavapai College.
Both teams were having trouble getting their shots to fall in the early going, but Cochise found themselves leading 13-9 after one-quarter of play. Shooting woes continued for both teams throughout the rest of the first half, as Cochise took a 25-20 lead into the break. A strong showing by the Matadors on both ends of the floor allowed them to jump Cochise and take a 35-32 lead into the final quarter. However, another brilliant and hard-fought finish by the Apaches allowed them to regain and extend their lead to ten points, securing their 10th straight win.
Sophomore Micayla Silas had a game-high 18 points and added 4 steals on the defensive end. Sophomore Jessie Joaquim had another strong showing, contributing 10 points and grabbing 20 rebounds on the night. Sophomore Kaylynn Asberry led the team with 9 assists and chipped in 6 points of her own.
