Cochise Women's Basketball falls twice to Arizona Western on the road

YUMA, Ariz. --- The Cochise Women's Basketball team traveled to Yuma, Arizona last week to take on the Matadors of Arizona Western College. The Apaches were coming off of a home split with Eastern Arizona College, and AWC came into the games as winners of six in a row.

 

Wednesday, December 13th: Cochise 62, Arizona Western 71

In what was a back-and-forth affair in the first game between the Apaches and Matadors, Arizona Western eventually pulled away with the win in the final minutes of the game. Sophomores Ali Hardwell, Fortuna Ngnawo, and Ameena Muhammad all scored in double-figures for Cochise, with Hardwell leading all scorers with 16 points. Freshman Michelle Nkolo came off of the bench for the Apaches scoring 8 points and collecting five rebounds and three assists.

 

Thursday, December 14th: Cochise 43, Arizona Western 53

Cochise was back on the court in Yuma the next day following a narrow loss to AWC and looking to bounce back on the road. The Apaches and Matadors kept things close similar to the night before, however, the Apaches missed critical shots in the final five minutes of the game and Arizona Western pulled away with another win. Ngnawo was the leading scorer for Cochise going 7 for 11 from the field scoring 16 points with 7 rebounds. Freshman Leamsi Acuna collected 7 points with one offensive rebound, and Sophomore Alexis Reese scored 5 points with 8 rebounds.

Cochise Women's Basketball (4-5,2-3) will participate in the Aztec Classic in Tucson, AZ hosted by Pima Community College from December 28th-30th. The Apaches will face South Plains College (12/28), Bismark State (12/29), and Eastern Wyoming (12/30), all games have a scheduled tip-off of 6:30 pm.
