Cochise Baseball drops two of three in conference series on the road

THATCHER, Ariz. --- The Cochise Baseball team was in Thatcher this weekend for another conference road series. The Apaches visited Eastern Arizona College for a three-game set beginning Friday, February 14th.

Game 1 (Friday, February 14th): Cochise 9, Eastern Arizona 10

On Friday afternoon, Cochise fell to EAC on the game's final play when an error scored the game-winning run for the Gila Monsters. Early in the game, freshman TJ Shaw Jr. opened with a home run in the first and another home run in the fourth, extending the Apaches lead over EAC 9-4. EAC scored four runs in the 8th inning and another two in the 9th to walk it off over Cochise 10-9. Sophomore Mathis Nayral opened the game on the mound for Cochise, surrendering five hits and four runs over six innings, striking out seven and walking three. Cochise collected 12 hits on the day, led by freshman Tyson Owens, who had three hits in five at-bats.

Game 2 (Saturday, February 15th): Cochise 5, Eastern Arizona 4

Cochise took one back from EAC in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon, coming back after being down 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning when freshman Jorge Cardenas singled, scoring two runs. Freshman Andrugh Yee hit a homerun in the fifth inning. Sophomore Alejandro Vanegas began the game on the mound for Cochise giving up eight hits and four runs over six innings. Freshman Daniel Gomez tossed one inning of shutout ball in relief. 

Game 3 (Saturday, February 15th): Cochise 3, Eastern Arizona 14

The Apaches dropped the third game of the conference series late Saturday afternoon surrendering nine EAC runs in the second inning. The Gila Monsters did not look back, scoring two more runs in the third and defeating Cochise via the run rule in the fifth inning. Offensively, Shaw continued his big weekend, going 3-for-3. Freshmen Daniel Martins, Jose Pimentel, Osvaldo Guzman, and sophomore Sotaro Ishida each pitched for Cochise.

Cochise Baseball (12-5,5-4) will host Arizona Western (12-3,6-3) for another three-game conference series, beginning Friday, February 21st, for one game at 2:00 pm and a doubleheader Saturday, February 22nd, starting at noon.
