Cochise splits doubleheader, takes series against Utah State-Eastern

Douglas, Ariz. --- Cochise Baseball wrapped up a four-game series with a doubleheader on Monday afternoon against the Utah State-Eastern Golden Eagles. The Apaches entered the day riding a nine-game winning streak.

Monday, February 10th (Game 1, 7 innings): Cochise 5, Utah State-Eastern 14

The Utah bats came out swinging in game 1, as they were able to score in each of the first six innings of play. It was a tough day for the Apaches pitching, as they surrendered fourteen hits, eleven earned runs, and walked seven. Kenneth Rhein brought in a pair of runs in the bottom half of the 5th with a two-run double, later followed by an Alex Dabrowski RBI single and TJ Shaw RBI groundout. Dabrowski led the team, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Rhein could reach base twice and add two RBIs of his own.

Monday, February 10th (Game 2, 7 innings): Cochise 10, Utah State-Eastern 8

There was no shortage of offense in game two, as both teams combined for eighteen runs and twenty-five hits. Cochise found themselves down 7-0 in the bottom half of the 3rd before jumping Utah State-Eastern with an eight-run inning. That inning included an RBI double from Francisco Laya, along with RBI singles from TJ Shaw, Jorge Cardenas, and Hadley Smith. The Apaches added more in the 5th with a solo shot off the bat of Smith and from Shaw, who singled and later scored on a balk. Shaw, Owens, Cardenas, and Smith had two hits in the game. Collin Smith pitched the final two innings, giving up one earned and striking out four.

Cochise Baseball (11-3, 4-2) will jump back into conference play as they head on the road to face Eastern Arizona (7-7, 4-2) on February 14th at 2:00 PM and February 15th for a doubleheader starting at noon in Thatcher, Arizona.
