Apaches take the first two to start series against Colorado Northwestern

DOUGLAS, Ariz.--- Cochise Baseball began a two-day, four-game series Tuesday afternoon, hosting the Colorado Northwestern Spartans. The Apaches get their first non-conference matchup of the season, after sweeping Community Christian College in a three-game set over the weekend.

Tuesday, February 4th (Game 1, 7 innings): Cochise 11, Colorado Northwestern 1

The Apaches were able to take game one in convincing fashion, behind a strong start from Collin Smith and an impressive offensive showing. Smith pitched five innings, giving up one earned, and striking out three. Jose Pimentel came on in relief, striking out the side in his lone inning of work. Cochise showed strong discipline at the plate early on in the 1st inning, walking four times, and combined with a hit by pitch, that brought two across. Fransisco Laya led the squad in game one, going 3 for 4 with two extra-base hits and three RBI's. Tyson Owens also added three RBI's, which included a walk-off two-run double via the ten-run rule. Noah Allison and Alex Dabrowski also mixed in with two hits each.

Tuesday, February 4th (Game 2, 7 innings): Cochise 6, Colorado Northwestern 1

Game 2 of the doubleheader began scoreless through the first three, until Northwestern brought one across on a sacrifice fly. Cochise immediately responded in the bottom half by scoring off an error and a no-doubt grand slam off the bat of Hadley Smith, scoring five in the inning. Hadley finished the second game going 2 for 3 with five RBI's, including the grand slam, and nabbing two runners trying to steal behind the plate. Shaw, Blanco, and Rhein combined for three of Cochise's five total hits in the game. Daniel Martins got the start on the mound, going three innings, giving up one run, and striking out four. Guzman pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning in relief, while Gomez threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings, with four strikeouts.

Cochise Baseball (6-2, 4-2) will be back at it again versus Colorado Northwestern (0-12) on Wednesday, February 5th, as they finish off the remainder of the four-game series at Bo Hall field in Douglas, Arizona, with the doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
