Cochise Sweeps PGS

Meurant belts two grand slams in one day as Cochise sweeps PGS

DOUGLAS, Ariz. --- Cochise Baseball hosted Post Grad Baseball out of Scottsdale, AZ Tuesday for a doubleheader at Bo Hall Field. The Apaches aimed to keep momentum going after sweeping Pima last weekend on the road and did just that as they cruised past PGS in two games that were both called due to the 10-run rule.

Game 1 (5 innings): Cochise 11, Post Grad 1

The first game of the doubleheader saw PGS grab the early lead over Cochise, scoring one run in the first inning off of a hit-by-pitch, passed ball, and a base hit. That was the only lead PGS held over Cochise all day and was short-lived as Cochise responded in the second inning and did not look back. The Apaches scored nine runs in the third inning led by a grand slam from sophomore Mathis Meurant. Freshman catcher Hadley Smith followed with a two-run homer of his own. In total, Cochise collected 13 hits, with Muerant, Francisco Laya, Richard Gutierrez, Kieran Gaffney, and Alex Dabrowski each collecting multiple hits. Freshman pitcher Ramses Guerra started on the mound for Cochise, giving up one hit and one run over one inning. Guerra was relieved by Eduardo Torres, Jake Green, and Luis Diaz.

Game 2 (5 innings): Cochise 12, PGS 0

In Game 2, Cochise jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first for starting pitcher Tyson Noel. Two more runs were scored in the third, and seven more in the fourth which included Mathis Muerant's second grand slam of the day giving the sophomore infielder a total of nine RBI's on the day. Gutierrez, Gaffney, Mason Wray, and George Hogan each had one hit for Cochise in Game 2, which was called short due to the 10-run rule. Noel threw two innings, followed by relief appearances on the mound from Tanguy Meurant, Olmedo Quezada, and Alex Figueroa who managed to keep Post Grad hitless in the five innings of play.
