Women's basketball rally together for a 30 point win

After having two games canceled during the week due to the opposing team having COVID exposures, the Cochise College women's basketball team was excited and ready to perform on Saturday, February 12. The team's eagerness was confirmed on the scoreboard as the Apaches finished the contest with a 30-point win over the Coyotes of Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Saturday's performance was night and day compared to these two teams' last meeting in January when the Apaches walked away with only a 10-point win. Cochise appeared to be a lot more dominant defensively in Saturday's contest, holding the Coyotes to 53 points; and more poised offensively, committing only seven turnovers.

The Apaches entered the match again with a total of seven players active to play. All seven players were guards. The lack of generic inside presence hasn't seemed to rattle the group of skilled and athletic guards as they have continued to compete and battle.

The team shot an impressive 45.2% from the field and 47.6% from the three. The team's efficiency was imperative for pulling off such a dynamic win.

The Apaches were led by sophomore Aja Phoumiphat, who was three rebounds shy of another career double-double. The sophomore ended the night with 24 points and seven rebounds. Phoumiphat continues to lead the team in rebounding for the season. Three other Apaches ended the contest in double figures; sophomores Corina Suarez Tudela with 14 points, Tatjana Tater with 18 points, and freshman Jess Lawson with 18 points. Lawson and Tudela both ended the contest with double-doubles with double-digit rebounds. Tudela had 11 rebounds, and Lawson led the group with 13 rebounds.

This Wednesday, February 16, the Apaches host a very good Eastern Arizona College team at 5:30 p.m.
