Cochise outlasts Chandler Gilbert in 100-84 win

The Cochise College men's basketball used a balanced offensive attack to wear down a very scrappy Chandler Gilbert Coyote squad last night in a 100-84 victory in the Stronghold gymnasium at the Douglas Campus. The win is the ninth in a row for the Apaches.

Freshman big man Oscar Cluff led the Apaches with another double-double pouring in 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Newcomer Jay Rodgers pumped in 25 points with four 3 point field goals on the night. In total, the Apaches had five guys in double figure scoring.

Cochise is now 17-1 overall and 8-0 in ACCAC play.

"We challenged our guys at halftime to defend with better integrity as our Field Goal defense percentage was poor in the first half," said Cochise Head Coach Jerry Carrillo. "Our guys responded as we held them to 37% from the floor in the second half. We wore them down in the last eight minutes of the game. But Chandler Gilbert was very tough tonight as they defended with great physicality, and it bothered us at times."

Sophomore Guard Jalun Trent added, "Coach wanted us to work hard on the defensive end in the second half, and we took pride in getting stops. It led to many transition baskets in the last 10 minutes of the game."
